Dinner Party
Dec 23, 2006

Left to Right, Standing: Dr. Phyllis with Polish-Israeli-British filmmaker extraordinaire and Holocaust memoirist, Mira Hammermesh. Left to Right, Seated: Hebrew teacher extraordinaire Rachel Shargal and eminent Freud scholar and former editor of Partian Review, Edith Kurzweil. Both Hammermesh and Kurzweil escaped Hitler when they were teen-agers. Hammermesh has done award-winning films about white maids and black madams in apartheid-era South Africa, the caste system in India, the “madness” that overtakes some visitors to Jerusalem, the Palestine-Israel “situation” and how contemporary Poland views its missing and murdered Jews—namely, with nostalgia. Young Polish Christians are learning Yiddish, marketplace vendors sell Hassidic puppets, etc.
